Man is the main town of the misty western highlands of Cote d'Ivoire, ringed by forested peaks, waterfalls and the liana bridges of the Dan country. It is the heartland of the country's mask traditions, home to the Dan, Guere and Wobe peoples and their sacred masked dances.
No organizer, no ticket office. This is a living tradition, and the way in is simply to be there; guides get you inside it.
Why here
The mask dances of the Man region are among the most powerful living traditions in West Africa. In the forested hills of the far west, the Dan, Guere and Wobe peoples hold masked performances in which the mask is not a face covering but a full costumed spirit, understood to mediate between the human world and the world of the ancestors. Each mask has its own role, from the judge and the singer to the acrobatic Gue Gblen and the towering stilt dancer who spins and drops on wooden legs several metres high. The dances cluster in the dry season and around communal celebrations, when villages stage contests to honour the forest spirits and mark the important moments of the year. Some masks and rites are closed to outsiders, so this is a tradition to approach with a guide and real respect. For the traveller it is a rare chance to witness a masquerade culture that still holds its meaning rather than performing for a stage.
Best months
The masked dances are most active in the dry season, roughly November to February, when the roads into the hill villages are passable and communities gather. Exact performances are not scheduled for tourists; they follow the community calendar, so timing depends on local arrangements made through a guide. The western highlands are cooler and wetter than the coast, with morning mist over the peaks; carry rain cover even in the dry months and be ready for rough forest roads.
Getting there & around
Man lies about 500 kilometres northwest of Abidjan, reached by a long drive or a domestic flight to the region. Because the mask dances follow the community calendar and some rites are closed to outsiders, arrange the visit through a tour operator or local guide who can secure permission and interpret what you are seeing. Base in Man for the surrounding villages, the waterfalls and the sacred-monkey forest. The far west is calmer than in the 2000s but check current advisories before travelling.
