Why here

Ati-Atihan is the mother of Philippine festivals: centuries older than Sinulog and Dinagyang, both of which copied it, and still the most participatory of the three. For a week in January, Kalibo's streets fill with soot-painted dancers in tribal costume drumming in honor of the Santo Nino, and the crowd does not watch so much as join; the festival's unofficial motto is hala bira, keep going, and visitors get pulled into the snake-dancing lines within minutes. Where Sinulog stages a parade, Ati-Atihan throws a street party with a four-hundred-year pedigree, and its home town is small enough that the whole place becomes the venue.

Held annually in the second and third weeks of January, climaxing on the third Sunday; the 2026 edition runs January 12-21. The local government publishes each year's calendar. January is dry season in the Visayas: hot days, warm nights, drumming until late.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Kalibo (KLO), served from Manila and Cebu and doubling as a Boracay gateway, so festival plus island pairs naturally. Book rooms one to two months out for the final weekend; the town is small and fills completely. The street events are free; bring clothes that can take soot and water.
