Gouyave Fish Friday
A working fishing town on Grenada's west coast in St. John parish, long called the spice capital of the island for its nutmeg processing station. Known locally as the town that never sleeps, Gouyave is best known to visitors for Fish Friday, a weekly street festival of fresh seafood, music and community life along St. Francis Street.

Gouyave Fish Friday is the most enjoyable window into everyday Grenadian life you can find, a weekly street party thrown by a working fishing town rather than staged for visitors. Every Friday after dark the narrow blocks of St. Francis Street and Chapel Lane fill with tented stalls, coloured lights and woodsmoke, and the whole town comes out to eat. Vendors serve whatever the boats brought in: fried snapper and jacks, lambie (conch) simmered in its own water, fish cakes, garlic butter kebabs, saltfish, crab back, callaloo, roast breadfruit and bakes, washed down with local rum, sorrel, sea moss and mauby. Steel pan, calypso, soca and reggae carry down the street, children dart between the stalls, and visitors end up shoulder to shoulder with fishermen and grandmothers over shared benches. The event began in the mid-2000s as a community-development idea, a way to promote Gouyave, the island's spice capital, as a fishing village and keep money in local hands, and it worked, becoming one of Grenada's signature nights out. It costs nothing to walk in, only what you spend on plates, and it runs every week of the year, so unlike the big August carnival you can always catch it.

Fish Friday runs every Friday of the year, getting going around 6pm and building through the evening until late; the busiest, best hours are roughly 7pm to 10pm. Because it is weekly rather than a single annual date, there is nothing to time your whole trip around, but any Friday works, and the last Friday of the month and nights around public holidays tend to be liveliest. It is an outdoor street event, so it goes ahead rain or shine under the tents. Come hungry, bring small cash in EC dollars, and expect a friendly crush rather than crowds on carnival scale.
Getting there & around
Gouyave sits on the west coast in St. John parish, about a 40 to 50 minute drive up the coast road from St. George's. Many hotels and tour operators run shared round-trip transport to Fish Friday, which is the easiest option, since parking is tight and you will want a rum or two; a taxi or hire car also works. The festival is walkable once you arrive, concentrated on a couple of blocks of St. Francis Street and Chapel Lane near the waterfront. There is no entry fee; you pay each stall for what you eat, so carry small EC notes. Go with an appetite and plan to graze across several vendors rather than one big plate.
