Timkat
A former imperial capital in Ethiopia's northern highlands, known for the 17th-century castle compound of Fasil Ghebbi and for hosting the country's grandest Timkat Epiphany celebration at the royal baths of Fasilides.

Timkat, the Ethiopian Orthodox Epiphany, is the festival to witness in Ethiopia, and Gondar stages the most spectacular version of it. On the eve of 19 January, replicas of the Ark of the Covenant are carried in procession from the city's churches to the 17th-century royal bath of Fasilides, escorted by drummers, chanting priests and crowds in white shawls. At dawn a priest blesses the great stone pool and the faithful plunge in to renew their baptism, a mass of colour and water and song. Timkat was inscribed on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019. Gondar's imperial castles give the whole event a backdrop no other Ethiopian city can match.
Best months
Timkat is fixed to 19 January most years, moving to 20 January in the year before a Gregorian leap year, with the Ketera eve procession the afternoon before and a further saint's-day celebration on the following morning. January is dry and sunny by day but cold at Gondar's 2,100 metre altitude after dark. Book accommodation months ahead, as the town fills, and arrive early at the baths for the dawn ceremony.
Getting there & around
Gondar has an airport with daily flights from Addis Ababa and is the usual gateway to the Simien Mountains. The Fasilides bath sits a short drive or walk from the centre and the castle compound is in town. For Timkat, reserve rooms and a guide far in advance, dress modestly and warmly for the pre-dawn start, and expect dense but good-natured crowds around the pool.
