A restored mud-brick town on the edge of Riyadh, on the banks of Wadi Hanifah, whose At-Turaif district was the first capital of the Saudi state and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Bujairi Terrace dining quarter.
Why here
Diriyah is where the Saudi state began, and At-Turaif is the physical proof. This district of Najdi mud-brick palaces and mosques on Wadi Hanifah was the seat of the Emirate of Diriyah, the first Saudi state, from 1727 until Ottoman forces razed it in 1818, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Restored and reopened to the public, it is now walkable on a guided route that threads between the old defensive walls and the layered clay towers, with several museums set into the buildings and Al Ardah sword-dance performances, itself a UNESCO intangible heritage tradition, staged in the district. Come in the late afternoon to see the clay glow at sunset, then cross to the Bujairi Terrace for dinner in the same architectural style.
Best months
The comfortable season is October to April; midsummer days are extreme, so the site is best in the cooler evenings even then. Guided tours run in Arabic and English at regular intervals through the day, with the last light around sunset the most atmospheric and the busiest. Entry to At-Turaif is by the Diriyah Pass, which can be bought on site or in advance.
Getting there & around
Diriyah sits about 15 minutes northwest of central Riyadh and is an easy taxi or ride-hail from the city. Entry to the At-Turaif heritage district requires a Diriyah Pass, and guided tours depart roughly every half hour in Arabic and English; book ahead online in peak season. The adjoining Bujairi Terrace has more than twenty restaurants and cafes and needs no ticket. Allow two to three hours for the guided route plus museums.
