Calabar, capital of Cross River State in southeastern Nigeria, is a green riverine city above the Calabar river, once a major 19th-century trading port and now the gateway to the Cross River rainforest. It is best known for hosting Nigeria's largest street carnival every December.

The Calabar Carnival bills itself as Africa's biggest street party, a month-long December festival that turns the whole city into a stage. It was launched in 2004 by the then Cross River governor Donald Duke as the centrepiece of a state tourism drive, and each year thousands of costumed dancers in five competing bands parade a route several kilometres long while the city fills with concerts, a boat regatta and a Christmas village. The main days fall the week after Christmas, with the Cultural Carnival and Night of Kings and Queens, a junior carnival, and the headline Parade of the Bands. Calabar itself, set among rainforest and river, is one of the more relaxed cities to base in southern Nigeria. For a first-time visitor the carnival is the most accessible mass celebration in the country, colour and rhythm at national scale in a single festive week.
Best months
Carnival programming runs across December, with the flagship parades falling between 26 and 30 December. Late December in Calabar is warm and relatively dry, at the edge of the Harmattan season, though the surrounding rainforest keeps humidity high. The parade days draw the densest crowds and heaviest traffic, so pick a viewing spot early and carry water and sun cover for a long day on your feet.
Getting there & around
Calabar has its own airport, Margaret Ekpo International, with domestic flights from Lagos and Abuja; it is the easiest way in over the December holiday. Cross River State is not among the Level 4 states listed for southeastern Nigeria, but the US State Department keeps an overall Level 3 Reconsider Travel advisory on Nigeria (as of 2026-07), so keep to the city and organised transport and monitor current guidance. Book flights and rooms early, as carnival week is the busiest of the year.

Carnival Calabar Commission
OrganizerThe Carnival Calabar Commission is the Cross River State body that stages the Calabar Carnival, the month-long December festival launched in 2004 by then-governor Donald Duke and billed as Africa's biggest street party. Chaired by Sir Gabe Onah, the Commission organises the five competing costume bands, the Parade of the Bands, the Cultural Carnival and Night of Kings and Queens, and the supporting concerts and boat regatta. The 2026 edition carries the theme Rethinking Our Collective Destiny.
