Why here
Sugar Mas is the national carnival of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and unlike most Caribbean carnivals it runs through the second half of December into the first days of January rather than before Lent. The season builds over several weeks and peaks in Basseterre with the Grand Carnival Parade, J'ouvert before dawn, calypso and soca competitions, pageants, and the masquerade troupes in full costume. It grew out of older Christmas-time street traditions, the masquerades, mummies and clowns of the sugar-estate era, and now folds those roots into a modern carnival of steel pan, brass and DJ trucks. Because it lands over the holidays, it turns the quiet dry-season capital into the busiest weeks of the island's year. For a traveller it is the deepest look at Kittitian and Nevisian culture, staged in the streets of the capital with no ticket needed to line the parade route.
Best months
A weeks-long carnival season running from mid-December to the first days of January, centred on Basseterre and building to the Grand Parade around New Year. The street events, J'ouvert and parades are free to watch; ticketed shows such as the calypso and soca finals and the pageants are sold separately. December is the dry season but evenings are warm and events run very late. The capital is at its busiest, so book accommodation and flights months ahead.
Getting there & around
The carnival centres on Basseterre, with parades and shows in and around the capital and Warner Park; most street events are free and walkable from downtown, while set-piece shows are ticketed by the carnival commission. Flights arrive at Basseterre's Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw airport a short drive from the action. The holiday weeks are the island's peak season, so reserve rooms and flights well in advance.
