Wine / Spirits Education in Margaret RiverAU
Western Australia's wine and surf corner, where a maritime climate between two capes produces some of the New World's benchmark Cabernet and Chardonnay.
Why here
Margaret River produces roughly two percent of Australia's wine but around twenty percent of its premium wine, and its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay sit among the New World's benchmarks. The education here is estate-led and structured: Vasse Felix, the region's founding winery from 1967, runs tutored masterclasses that include tastings from its museum cellar, and Leeuwin Estate opens its Art Series production behind the scenes. Vintage, February to April, adds working-winery access that most wine regions reserve for staff. No WSET classroom operates locally; the learning is glass-in-hand with the people who made the region, which is its own argument.
Best months
Cellar doors run year-round. February to April is vintage, the liveliest and most instructive window; October to December brings spring weather and fewer buses. Book the structured masterclasses ahead rather than relying on walk-in tastings.
Getting there & around
Three hours' drive south of Perth. A car is essential; estates spread along Caves Road between the two capes. The surf breaks and cellar doors share the same ten kilometers, which makes uneven-interest travel easy.
