Wildlife Safaris in Zarnesti
The Piatra Craiului foothill town where purpose-built hides put you meters from Europe's largest brown bear population.
Why here
Romania holds Europe's largest brown bear population outside Russia, roughly sixty percent of the EU's total, and the forests around Zarnesti are where watching them is engineered properly: purpose-built two-storey hides above feeding clearings with sighting rates of eighty to ninety percent in season. The Fagaras hides deepen the story, adding wolf, lynx, and the reintroduced European bison, and Travel Carpathia's profits fund the continent's largest private conservation project, the attempt to build a European Yellowstone in these mountains. Dusk falls, the clearing stirs, and the reason Romania kept its wilderness becomes a thing you watch breathe.
Best months
April to November, with May to October the dusk-session peak. Hide sessions run about four hours with strict quiet; overnight hide cabins extend the odds. Book ahead in summer; groups are deliberately small.
Getting there & around
Zarnesti is 30 minutes from Brasov; operators run evening trips from town or overnight stays at the Fagaras hides. Quiet discipline is the only skill required.
