A coastal wilderness in southwest Gabon where rainforest, lagoon and Atlantic beach meet, famous for forest elephants and buffalo on the sand, surfing hippos in the surf, and habituated western lowland gorillas inland.
Why here
Loango is the park that gave Gabon its nickname, Africa's last Eden, and it delivers one of the strangest wildlife scenes on the continent: forest elephants and buffalo walking white Atlantic beaches, western lowland gorillas in the forest behind, and hippos that swim out through the surf, the origin of the famous surfing hippo photographs. On a single stay you can track a habituated gorilla group in the morning, watch elephants and red river hogs on the lagoon shore by boat in the afternoon, and, from July to October, see humpback whales and dolphins offshore. The gorillas are being habituated through a long-running project led by Germany's Max Planck Institute together with Gabon's national parks agency, which lets small groups approach on foot. Behind the megafauna is a mosaic of ocean, mangrove, savanna and swamp forest that also holds leopards, chimpanzees, sitatunga and more than three hundred bird species. It is remote and expensive to reach, and that is exactly why the wildlife behaves as if people are new.
Best months
The main dry season from June to September is the classic window: easier forest tracking, animals concentrated near water, and the humpback whale migration offshore from July into October. Short dry spells around December and January also work. Gorilla tracking is on foot over humid, uneven ground and is physically demanding, with sightings never guaranteed. The long rains bring lush conditions but harder access and more insects.
Getting there & around
Gabon requires an e-visa for most visitors, and Loango is reached from Libreville by a short domestic flight to Port-Gentil or Omboue and then a boat transfer, or by a long overland-and-river route, so almost everyone books a full package with an operator who handles flights, permits and camps. Gorilla tracking permits are limited and arranged in advance. Bring lightweight layers, sun and rain protection, and sturdy shoes for wet forest walking. Check your government advisory for Gabon before travel.
