Wildlife Safaris in Livno
The Kruzi plateau above Livanjsko polje, where some eight hundred wild horses roam in herds compared only to Mongolia and Iceland.
Why here
Roughly eight hundred feral horses, descendants of working animals released in the 1950s, roam the Kruzi plateau above Livanjsko polje, a herd density operators compare only to Mongolia and Iceland, and it is Europe's most accessible wild-horse safari: Land Rover excursions of three hours put you among the herds for fifty euros. The specialist operators run it year-round, foals in spring, golden September light, and a dedicated winter photo-safari season when the herds move through snow, plus birding across a polje that has recorded 264 species. Ninety kilometers from Split, it is the wildest thing within reach of the Dalmatian coast.
Best months
Year-round: April-June for foals, September-October light, November-March snow photo safaris by reservation. Rough 4x4 tracks are the access; no fitness required. Book ahead in season.
