Wildlife Safaris in Kuhmo
A remote town in the Kainuu region of eastern Finland, hard against the Russian border in a belt of boreal forest, lake and wetland known as Wild Taiga. It is the country's premier base for photographing wild brown bear, wolverine and wolf from purpose-built hides through the long, barely dark nights of the northern summer.
Why here
Kuhmo is the best place in Europe to sit with wild brown bears. This corner of the eastern taiga, pressed against the Russian border, holds one of the continent's densest brown bear populations, and alongside them the elusive wolverine and, on lucky nights, wolves. From late spring through summer the bears feed through the long, barely dark nights, and small operators run purpose-built photography hides where you settle in the evening and stay until morning, watching and shooting as animals cross the wetlands and forest edges in front of you. The area has drawn bear photographers since the 1990s, and much of the hide land is now protected private conservation ground where hunting is banned, so the animals are calm and predictable. Bring a long lens and warm clothing: the reward is brown bear, wolverine and the taiga soundscape at close range, with no fence in sight.
Best months
The hide season runs roughly May to August, when the bears are active and the nights never fully darken, making all-night photography possible. Sits are overnight: you enter the hide in the early evening and leave the next morning, so pack warm layers, food and patience. Sightings are wild and never guaranteed, though summer success rates are high. Wolverine and wolf appear less often than bear. Book directly with the Kuhmo operators, who provide the hides and transfers.
Getting there & around
Kuhmo sits in the Kainuu region of eastern Finland. The usual approach is to fly to Kajaani and drive about two hours east to the hide areas near Vartius and Viiksimo, close to the border, or take the train to Kajaani or Kontiomaki. Operators run transfers from their lodges to the hides. Services out here are limited, so most visitors stay on site with the operator, who provides the hide, an evening meal and a morning pickup.

Bear Centre
OutfitterBear Centre, run by the long-established Wild Brown Bear company, has arranged bear and wolverine photography in the Vartius wilderness of Kuhmo, near the eastern border, since 1999. Its hide area has been a private nature conservation zone since 2016, where hunting is banned, and holds more than 20 photography hides across forest, wetland and open ground, plus a traditional watching house and a luxury cabin. Overnight sits target brown bear, wolverine and wolf.
Boreal Wildlife Centre
OutfitterBoreal Wildlife Centre is a small operator in Viiksimo, Kuhmo, run by a team of Finnish, French and Belgian naturalists including Tommi Hentela and Veronique Fournier. Its hides sit in taiga a short distance from the Russian border, an area where large carnivores have been photographed for more than 30 years. Overnight photography sessions target brown bear and wolverine, with wolf a regular chance, and the lodge offers full-board accommodation between sits.
