The operator story is the destination's soul: Whale Watch Kaikoura is owned by the Ngati Kuri hapu of Ngai Tahu, founded in 1989 by families who mortgaged their homes to start it, and it rebuilt the town's economy around living whales. Dolphin Encounter, New Zealand's first dolphin-swim operator, has run in-water dusky encounters for over three decades under strict marine-mammal rules.
Best months
Year-round: sperm whales are resident, duskies are reliable, and winter adds migrating humpbacks and orcas. Sea conditions cancel more trips than seasons do; build in a spare day. Dolphin swims run at set dawn and morning departures with wetsuits provided.
Getting there & around
Two and a half hours north of Christchurch by car or the Coastal Pacific train. Book boats a few days ahead in summer; whale flights are the backup when swell cancels boats.
