Wildlife Safaris in Ilulissat
A town on Disko Bay in western Greenland at the mouth of the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier calves some of the largest icebergs outside Antarctica, a summer whale-watching hub and Greenland's busiest tourism gateway.
Why here
Disko Bay off Ilulissat is one of the best places in the Arctic to watch great whales feed, and doing it with icebergs the size of cathedrals in the background is unique to Greenland. Through the summer, humpback whales gather in the bay's nutrient-rich water to feed, breaching and slapping their flukes, joined by smaller minke whales and, less often, the giant fin whale and the occasional blue whale. Small boats out of Ilulissat take you among them, close enough to hear the blows, then weave back through the drifting ice at the fjord mouth. Beluga and narwhal pass the region in the colder months, and seals haul out year-round. You go out with local skippers who grew up fishing these waters and know where the whales are working.
Best months
Whale season is the summer, roughly mid-June to September, when humpbacks are reliably in Disko Bay and the water is open for boats. Sightings of humpback and minke are close to daily in peak weeks, while fin and blue whales are a rarer bonus. Trips run in cold, sometimes rough open water even in July, so warm windproof layers are essential. Morning and late-evening light sits low over the ice.
Getting there & around
Ilulissat is reached by air from Kangerlussuaq or Nuuk, with no road links to other towns. Whale trips leave from the harbour in the centre of town and run two to three hours in open or semi-open boats, so dress for near-freezing wind and spray and bring motion-sickness precautions. Book ahead in July and August, the busiest weeks, and allow buffer days for weather cancellations.

OutfitterWhale Tours is a small owner-run operator in Ilulissat, registered under Greenlandic CVR 49598319, whose skipper was born and raised in the town and has fished across Disko Bay since childhood. Its three-hour whale tour runs from June to September, seeking out the humpback and minke whales that feed daily in the bay, with fin and occasional blue whales among the larger visitors. Boats leave from central Ilulissat below the Icefjord.
