Wildlife Safaris in Hutovo Blato
A karst wetland on the Adriatic flyway, Europe's largest winter bird refuge, toured by silent electric boats through the reeds.
Why here
Hutovo Blato is a 7,400-hectare karst wetland on the Adriatic flyway, Ramsar-listed and reckoned the continent's largest winter bird refuge, sheltering globally threatened pygmy cormorants and ferruginous ducks among more than 168 recorded species. The park institution itself runs the access: a fleet of silent boats, canoes, and bikes with guided English tours threading the reed channels, thirty minutes from Mostar and nearly empty outside weekends. Winter is the paradox season, when the flocks mass and the tourists vanish, and a boat safari costs less than lunch.
Best months
October to March for the wintering flocks, March to May for migration; summer is quietest for birds. Boat safaris run 45 or 90 minutes at ten to fifteen euros. Mornings beat the wind.
Getting there & around
Thirty minutes from Mostar toward the coast; the Karaotok park center is the base. Combine with Pocitelj's Ottoman hill town on the same road.
