Why here
The Hortobagy is the largest continuous natural grassland in Europe and the single best place in the country to watch birds in numbers. Its open puszta, sodic marshes and old fishpond systems sit on a major migration route, and every autumn up to a hundred thousand common cranes stage here, flooding out to their roosts at dusk in one of the continent's great wildlife spectacles. Alongside the cranes the plain holds Great Bustard, Saker Falcon, Red-footed Falcon, Imperial Eagle and wintering geese, with more than three hundred species recorded in the park. Hungarian-run birding operators work the site with hides and vehicle circuits that get you onto the grassland at the right hours.
Best months
The peak is the autumn crane migration from late September through October and into November, when the evening fly-ins are largest. Spring, from March to May, brings displaying bustards and returning raptors. Summer is quieter but good for breeding species. Dawn and dusk are the productive hours; the middle of the day on the open plain can be hot and still.
Getting there & around
Hortobagy village lies about two and a half hours east of Budapest, near Debrecen, reachable by car or train. The productive areas are spread across the plain and the fishponds, much of it needing permits or a guide to enter, so an organised birding trip with local knowledge and hide access is the practical way to see the most. Bring layers and a scope for the autumn crane roosts.

Its named guides lead trips targeting Great Bustard, Saker Falcon, Imperial Eagle and the autumn common crane migration. Tours are run directly by the guides rather than resold through an agency.

Its guides, led by owner Janos Olah, run autumn tours built around the crane spectacle, when up to a hundred thousand common cranes stage on the puszta, alongside Great Bustard, Saker Falcon, Red-footed Falcon and wintering geese. Departures are guaranteed from three participants upward with a small maximum group size.
