Wildlife Safaris in Hlane Royal National Park
Eswatini's largest protected area, some 30,000 hectares of hardwood savanna in the Lubombo low-veld and the only place in the kingdom to see lion. A former royal hunting ground turned national park, Hlane holds elephant, white rhino and lion, and one of Africa's densest breeding populations of white-backed vulture.
Why here
Hlane is where you go for a Big Game safari inside Eswatini rather than crossing into South Africa for one. It is the kingdom's biggest reserve and its only lion ground, and because it began as a royal hunting reserve the wildlife here carries a direct line to the Swazi crown. On a game drive you have a real chance at the low-veld's signature animals: elephant browsing the knobthorn, white rhino grazing the open pans, and lion and leopard in the fenced Big Cats section. Hlane is also one of the best raptor sites in the region, with a large breeding colony of white-backed vultures and nesting marabou storks over the camp. The scale is human and the crowds are thin, so a morning drive feels like the park is yours. You can also walk with an armed guide or cycle the rhino trails, which is rare on an African safari and a large part of why people make the detour. It pairs naturally with the cultural sites of the Ezulwini Valley an hour to the west.
Best months
The dry winter months from May to September are the best for game viewing: the grass is low, the bush is thin and animals concentrate at the waterholes in front of the main camp. Days are mild and nights cold, so a warm layer matters on early drives. The summer rains from November to March green the park and bring migrant birds but make animals harder to spot. Lion and cheetah are held in a separate fenced section reached on a guided drive; elephant and rhino range the open park.
Getting there & around
Hlane sits in eastern Eswatini off the MR3 near Simunye, about a 90-minute drive from the Ezulwini Valley and reachable by hire car on tar roads. The park runs game drives, guided walks and mountain-bike outings from its main Ndlovu camp, where self-catering rondavels and a campsite look over a floodlit waterhole. Book drives ahead in peak winter and on weekends. Bring cash for park fees, a torch and warm clothing for winter mornings; there is no fuel inside the park.

OutfitterBig Game Parks is the not-for-profit conservation trust Ted Reilly founded in 1964, when he turned his family farm at Mlilwane into Eswatini's first protected area and later rescued the kingdom's wildlife from near-total loss. Under royal mandate it manages Hlane Royal National Park, Mkhaya Game Reserve and Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, and at Hlane runs the game drives to its lion, elephant and white rhino, plus guided walks and mountain-bike rhino trails from Ndlovu camp.

From its base in the Ezulwini Valley it runs the full-day Hlane Big Cats Trail, tracking lion, elephant and rhino in the royal park, alongside caving, rafting on the Great Usutu river and Swazi cultural day tours. Its guides are Eswatini-based and it books game drives and lodge stays across the kingdom.
