Wildlife Safaris in HermanusZA
The Walker Bay town widely cited as the best land-based whale watching on earth, where southern rights calve meters off the cliff path.
Why here
Hermanus is widely cited as the best land-based whale watching in the world: from June to November, southern right whales calve and nurse in Walker Bay close enough to watch from the cliff path that runs the length of town, and Hermanus still employs a whale crier who sounds a kelp horn when they blow. Boat-based permits are deliberately limited, and the licensed operators report sighting rates around 99 percent in peak season, with humpbacks passing June to September and Bryde's whales resident. The Whale Festival, held over a spring long weekend, bills itself as the world's only eco-marine festival, but the honest advice is that any calm day in August, September, or October is the festival.
Best months
Southern rights hold in the bay June to November, peaking August to October; humpbacks pass June to September. Land-based viewing is free from the cliff path; boat trips run about two hours. The Whale Festival falls on a late September or early October weekend (October 2-4 in 2026).
Getting there & around
Ninety minutes from Cape Town along the coast road. The cliff path needs no booking; licensed boats depart the new harbour and sell out on festival weekends.
