Wildlife Safaris in Divjaka
The Karavasta lagoon's pine-fringed national park, breeding ground of Albania's flagship Dalmatian pelican colony.
Why here
The Karavasta lagoon in Divjaka National Park holds Albania's flagship Dalmatian pelican colony, roughly six percent of the European population of the world's largest freshwater bird, breeding on lagoon islands along the Adriatic Flyway. The operators are wildlife-first in the strictest sense: Birding Albania was founded by the ornithologist who wrote the country's first bird guide, and the Albanian Ornithological Society, the national conservation NGO, runs week-long pelican programs that fold visitors into colony monitoring. Ninety minutes from Tirana, regulated boat access, and a bird whose three-meter wingspan makes the argument on approach.
Best months
Mid-April to mid-June is the breeding peak; November to February brings the wintering waterbird masses. Colony viewing runs by regulated boat with the operators. Binoculars help; nothing else is required.
Getting there & around
Ninety minutes from Tirana; day tours run from 59 euros. The park's pine forest and beach fill the middle of the day between bird windows.
