Wildlife Safaris in Brunei River

Brunei · Southeast Asia

The tidal river and mangrove channels that wrap around Bandar Seri Begawan and the Kampong Ayer water village, a short boat ride from the capital where proboscis monkeys, silvered langurs and saltwater crocodiles live within sight of the city.

Why here

One of the easiest places in the world to see the proboscis monkey, Borneo's big-nosed, pot-bellied endemic, is a boat ride from the middle of Brunei's capital. The tidal Brunei River and its mangrove creeks, threading past the vast Istana Nurul Iman palace and the stilt houses of Kampong Ayer, hold troops of proboscis monkeys that gather in the riverside trees at dawn and dusk, alongside silvered langurs, long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, kingfishers and the occasional saltwater crocodile. Guides run open wooden boats into the quiet channels where the monkeys leap between the mangroves, and the same water turns magical after dark when the riverbank trees light up with synchronised fireflies. It is a genuine wildlife safari with none of the long transfers, the forest starts where the city ends.

River safaris run year round, timed to the tides and to the animals: late afternoon into dusk is best for the proboscis monkeys and rolls straight into the firefly viewing after dark, while dawn is the other prime window. Boats are small and open, so bring sun cover, water and a rain layer for a passing shower. Sightings are wild and not guaranteed, but proboscis troops are reliably resident along these mangrove reaches.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

Boats leave from jetties on the Bandar Seri Begawan waterfront and from Damuan park a short drive from the centre, so the safari is an easy half-day or evening out from any city hotel. Book a licensed guide who works the mangroves rather than a water taxi; most trips run about two to three hours and combine the proboscis mangroves with Kampong Ayer or the fireflies. No permit is needed beyond going with a licensed operator.
