Rich, plankton-fed Atlantic waters off this coast draw whales, dolphins and basking sharks inshore, making it Ireland's leading base for whale watching.
Why here
The waters off West Cork are the best in Ireland for watching large whales from a boat, and Baltimore is the village they leave from. From late summer into autumn, fin whales, the second-largest animal on earth, and humpback whales move inshore to feed on shoals of sprat and herring in and around Roaringwater Bay, sometimes lunging and breaching within sight of the coast. Earlier in the season minke whales, common dolphins, harbour porpoise and basking sharks are the regulars. Trips run out past Sherkin and Cape Clear toward the iconic Fastnet Rock lighthouse, so the seascape is a draw even between sightings. The operators here are small, owner-run and conservation-minded, run by skippers and marine naturalists who know where the animals feed, which is why this stretch of coast has become the reference point for Irish whale watching. For a real chance at big whales in European waters, this is the place.
Best months
The season runs roughly April to December, sea conditions permitting. Minke whales, common dolphins, porpoise and basking sharks are seen through spring and summer; the marquee fin and humpback whales come inshore mainly from late summer into autumn. Trips depend on weather and sea state and can be cancelled at short notice, so allow flexible days. Dress warm and waterproof, and bring layers even in summer.
Getting there & around
Baltimore is at the end of the R595 in West Cork, about an hour and a quarter from Cork city by road via Skibbereen. Whale watching trips depart from Baltimore Harbour and run several hours, so book ahead and keep flexible dates in case weather cancels a sailing. Bring warm, waterproof clothing, sun and seasickness precautions, and binoculars. Accommodation is in Baltimore and nearby Skibbereen.
