Wildlife Safaris in Andasibe-Mantadia
A belt of eastern rainforest reserves about three to four hours by road from Antananarivo, made up of the Analamazaotra reserve and the larger Mantadia National Park. It is the most accessible lemur-watching destination in Madagascar and the reliable place to see and hear the indri.
Why here
Andasibe-Mantadia is the easiest place in Madagascar to meet the indri, the largest living lemur and the one whose eerie, whale-like song carries more than a kilometre through the rainforest canopy at dawn. The reserves here hold habituated indri family groups, so a morning walk in the Analamazaotra forest almost always ends with a close, unhurried sighting of these black-and-white primates high in the trees. Alongside them the forest shelters the diademed sifaka, common brown and grey bamboo lemurs, and chameleons from the giant Parson's down to thumbnail-sized brookesias, while a night walk turns up mouse lemurs, leaf-tailed geckos and tree frogs. It is three to four hours by road east of the capital on a paved highway, which makes it the standard first stop on almost any Madagascar wildlife trip. Guiding here is community-run, so the fees you pay put money straight into local conservation and village projects rather than into an outside operator.
Best months
The forest is green and productive year round, but the warm months from September to December bring the most lemur activity, newborn infants and the best reptile and amphibian sightings, while January to March is hot and very wet. Indri sing mostly in the early morning, so the first walk of the day is the one to prioritise. Trails are damp and can be slippery, and a local park guide is required for every visit.
Getting there & around
Andasibe is a straightforward three-to-four-hour drive east of Antananarivo on the paved RN2, with a cluster of lodges near the park gate. Every walk needs a certified park guide, arranged at the entrance or through your operator, and you pay a park entry fee on top of guiding. Most visitors do an early-morning walk for the indri and a separate night walk on the forest edge, so plan at least one overnight in the village.

Association Mitsinjo
GuideAssociation Mitsinjo was formed in 1999 by residents of Andasibe village and has managed the Analamazaotra Forest Station, opposite the park entrance, since 2003. More than fifty local members, about half of them certified guides, run the day and night walks where habituated indri and Goodman's mouse lemur are the draw. The association reinvests its fees into reforestation, a captive-breeding programme for threatened frogs, and community health and farming projects.

The company works only on bespoke private tours, arranging transport, park permits and lodging as one package.
