Wildlife Safaris in AmboseliKE

Kenya's elephant stage under Kilimanjaro: the largest-tusked herds left in Africa crossing open lakebed with the mountain behind.

Why here

Amboseli holds some of the largest-tusked elephants left in Africa, studied continuously since 1972 by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, the longest-running elephant study in the world, and the guides in the surrounding conservancies know the big families individually. The image everyone carries of African elephants, herds crossing dry lakebed with Kilimanjaro's 5,895 meters rising directly behind, was made here and still happens most dry-season dawns. It is a different Kenya from the Mara: no river crossings, no migration clock, just the continent's most photogenic elephant population under its most famous mountain, with private conservancies on the park edge keeping the vehicle count civilized.

Best months

June to October and January to February are the dry windows, with the clearest Kilimanjaro views at dawn before the cloud builds. The April-May long rains are the honest low season. Conservancy stays add night drives and walks the park cannot offer.
