Trekking / Hiking in Wadden Sea
The intertidal sea and mudflats along the northern coast of the Netherlands, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest unbroken system of sand and mud flats in the world. Twice a day the tide falls to expose miles of seabed, the setting for wadlopen, the Dutch tradition of guided mudflat walking out to the Wadden islands.
Why here
Wadlopen, walking the sea floor at low tide, is the most distinctive thing you can do on foot in the Netherlands and it exists almost nowhere else. When the tide drops across the Wadden Sea it lays bare a vast plain of mud, sand and tidal channels, and with a licensed guide reading the water and the clock you wade out across it, sometimes knee-deep in silt, sometimes thigh-deep through a gully, all the way to islands such as Schiermonnikoog, Ameland or the remote bird sanctuary of Rottumeroog. It is hard, muddy, weather-exposed work, and it is also strangely meditative, a slow crossing of a landscape that will be under meters of seawater again in a few hours, alive with cockles, lugworms, seals hauled out on the banks and clouds of wading birds. The Wadden Sea has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009, and going with an experienced organization is not optional but a legal and safety requirement, because people have drowned misjudging the tide. Done right it is unforgettable.
Best months
The guided wadlopen season runs from roughly May to October, timed strictly to the tides, so departure times shift day to day and a crossing may start early or late. Trips grade from short two to three hour experience walks to long, demanding crossings to the islands of five hours or more through deep mud and channels. Conditions are fully weather-exposed and can turn cold and wet fast. Walking the mudflats without a licensed guide is dangerous and effectively prohibited; every crossing must go with an accredited organization reading the tide tables.
Getting there & around
Crossings leave from the northern coast, chiefly Lauwersoog and Pieterburen in Groningen and Holwerd in Friesland, reachable by car or regional bus from Groningen or Leeuwarden. On island crossings you walk out and return by scheduled ferry, so the fee usually includes the boat back. Wear shorts or quick-dry trousers and high shoes that lace on tightly against the sucking mud, and carry a full change of dry clothes in a waterproof bag. Book with the guiding organization ahead, especially in summer, and be ready for tide-driven start times.

From Lauwersoog and Pieterburen its licensed guides run crossings to Schiermonnikoog, Ameland and Rottumeroog, seal-watching walks and night waddles, all timed to the tide tables and graded from gentle experience tours to long island crossings.
Wadlopen Friese Wad
GuideWadlopen Friese Wad is a small Friesland guiding outfit, run by guides Klaas and Dick, leading mudflat walks across the UNESCO-protected Frisian Wadden Sea. Its trips range from the gentle Eilanderbult family walk of about seven kilometers to full crossings toward the island of Ameland from the Holwerd and Ternaard coast, timed to low tide and returning by scheduled ferry. The guides pair the physical crossing with an ecologist's reading of the mudflats, their birds, shellfish and channels.
