Why here
Tsingy de Bemaraha is a UNESCO World Heritage site in the west, a forest of grey limestone blades eroded into razor pinnacles so sharp that the Malagasy name means the place where you cannot walk barefoot. Exploring the Grand Tsingy is part hike and part via ferrata: you clip into fixed cables and ladders, squeeze through slot canyons, cross a suspension bridge strung high between the spires and climb out onto viewpoints above a stone forest that runs to the horizon. The massif shelters wildlife found almost nowhere else, including the white Decken's sifaka, red-fronted brown lemurs and the nocturnal fat-tailed dwarf lemur, along with endemic birds and chameleons wedged into the rock. Below it the Manambolo River cuts a gorge that many travellers reach by dugout canoe. It is one of the most physically demanding and rewarding places to walk in Madagascar, and the remoteness keeps the crowds thin even in high season.
Best months
The park is a dry-season destination. The rough tracks to Bekopaka are usually impassable from December to March, so the park effectively opens from around April or May to November, with June to September the reliable window. Days are hot and shade is scarce out on the pinnacles, and the via ferrata sections involve real heights, tight passages and steady scrambling, so a good level of fitness and a head for heights help. A local park guide and the harness kit are compulsory on the Grand Tsingy circuit.
Getting there & around
Access is from Morondava, a hard two-day 4x4 route north through Belo-sur-Tsiribihina with two river-ferry crossings to reach Bekopaka and the park gate. The trip is almost always combined with the Avenue of the Baobabs and Kirindy forest on the way. Harnesses and safety kit are provided at the park, and a certified guide leads every circuit. Distances and river ferries make this a multi-day commitment, not a day trip.
