Soufriere is Saint Lucia's oldest town, on the south-west coast beneath the twin volcanic spires of the Pitons. The former French colonial capital sits inside the Pitons Management Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is the island's adventure base, close to the drive-in Sulphur Springs volcano, botanical gardens, the reef walls of the Soufriere Marine Management Area, and the Gros Piton trailhead.
Why here
Gros Piton is the great walk-up summit of the Caribbean, the larger of the two lava spires that make the Pitons a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the emblem of Saint Lucia. The trail starts at the village of Fond Gens Libre, named for the freed people and escaped slaves, the Brigands, who used the mountain as a stronghold in the 18th century, and every ascent goes with a local guide from the interpretive centre at the base. The climb is about 798 metres of gain over roughly two hours up, easy at first around the mountain's skirt and then relentlessly steep on rooty, rocky steps through changing forest, from dry woodland to cloud-brushed summit scrub. The reward is a 360-degree view over Petit Piton, the town of Soufriere, the reefs of the marine park and, on a clear day, the neighbouring island of Saint Vincent. It is a genuine challenge rather than a technical climb, no ropes or scrambling, and finishing it is the classic Saint Lucian achievement.
Best months
The dry season from December to May gives the firmest footing and the best chance of a clear summit; the wet months make the steep upper section slick and often cap the peak in cloud. Start early, ideally at first light, to climb before the heat and the afternoon build-up. It is hot and humid low down and noticeably cooler and windier at the top, so carry layers, at least two litres of water and sturdy shoes with grip. A guide is mandatory and a permit fee applies, both arranged at the Fond Gens Libre interpretive centre.
Getting there & around
The trailhead at Fond Gens Libre is a rough 20-minute drive inland from Soufriere on a poor final road, so many hikers arrange transport as part of a guided package from Soufriere or the northern resorts. Guides and permits are organised on arrival at the interpretive centre; reservations are not usually needed but a booked operator smooths the transport and timing. Allow four to five hours for the round trip plus travel. There are no facilities on the mountain, so bring your own water and food. It is a demanding hike on steep, uneven ground and is not suited to young children or anyone with knee or heart problems.

GuideThe Gros Piton Tour Guides Association runs the mandatory guiding on the 798-metre summit trail from its interpretive centre at Fond Gens Libre, the village named for the freed people and runaways who once sheltered on the mountain. Its guides work in coordination with the Forestry Department, lead every ascent, brief hikers on the native flora and the Brigands' history at the base, and set the permit and pace. The centre opens daily and no climb is allowed without one of its guides.
