The Slovak Paradise, a national park of tight limestone gorges, waterfalls and one-way ladder trails in eastern Slovakia, where canyon routes climb past cascades on fixed steel rungs and bridges.
Why here
Slovensky raj is hiking with its hands on the rock. The park is a karst plateau split by narrow gorges, and the classic routes go straight up the streambeds, gaining height on ladders, steel rungs and catwalks bolted beside the waterfalls. The signature trail is Sucha Bela, a roughly two hour ascent through a green cleft past a chain of cascades, run strictly one way so climbers do not meet descenders on the ladders. Beyond it lie the Hornad river gorge with its cliff-edge walkways, the Tomasovsky vyhlad viewpoint, and the more demanding Kysel via ferrata. It is not high mountain terrain, so it suits fit beginners as much as experienced walkers, but the exposure on the ladders is real and the one-way system means you commit to the full gorge. The reward is a landscape of moss, water and limestone that feels much wilder than its modest altitude suggests.
Best months
The gorge trails open from June to the end of October and are closed in winter, when ice makes the ladders dangerous. Early summer runs the most water over the falls, which is also when the ladders are wettest and most slippery, so grippy footwear matters. The one-way gorges commit you to reaching the top, and popular routes like Sucha Bela back up on summer weekends, so an early start helps. Trails can be muddy after rain.
Getting there & around
The park sits between Poprad and Kosice, with the main trailhead hamlets of Podlesok and Cingov reached by car or local bus. Most gorge circuits are half to full day loops that start and finish at these bases, climbing a one-way gorge and returning on a ridge or valley path. No special gear is required for the standard ladder trails beyond sturdy shoes; the Kysel via ferrata needs a harness and set, which local guides supply. Park entry is ticketed at the trailheads.
