Trekking / Hiking in Samaria Gorge
Europe's longest gorge, cutting 16km through the White Mountains from Xyloskalo down to the Libyan Sea at Agia Roumeli.
Why here
Sixteen kilometres downhill through Europe's longest gorge, from the Xyloskalo steps at 1,250m to the Libyan Sea. The Iron Gates narrow to about three metres with 300m walls above. One-way, ending with a boat out of Agia Roumeli.
Best months
Park season is normally 1 May to 31 October, 08:00 last entry 16:00, but the opening date moves: in 2026 it slipped roughly two weeks past 1 May for meltwater and rockfall repairs. Confirm against NECCA before travelling. A guide is optional, not required, on the main marked path.
