The heart of Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, in the east of the country between Echternach, Berdorf and Consdorf, a landscape of deep wooded gorges, moss-covered sandstone cliffs, waterfalls and beech forest threaded by the 112-kilometre Mullerthal Trail.
Why here
The Mullerthal Trail is the finest walking in Luxembourg and one of the best short-distance trails in the Low Countries. Its 112 kilometres wind through the Mullerthal, the region long called Little Switzerland, past sandstone cliffs split into narrow passages, ferned gorges, waterfalls such as the Schiessentumpel, and beech woods that close over the path. The trail is built as three connecting routes plus five ExtraTours, so you can walk a single day loop out of Echternach or Berdorf or link the whole network across several days. In early 2014 it earned the Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe label from the European Ramblers Association, a mark held by only a handful of trails on the continent and awarded for waymarking, natural scenery and the balance of forest, rock and village. The rock is the real draw: Luxembourg sandstone weathered into corridors, overhangs and stairways you climb through rather than merely walk past.
Best months
The trail walks well from spring through late autumn, with April to October the settled window; the forest canopy keeps it shaded and cool in summer, and the autumn colour is a highlight. Paths turn muddy and rock steps slippery after rain, and some ExtraTour sections use ladders and narrow rock passages that need sure footing and a head for exposure. Winter walking is possible, but short daylight and ice on the stone stairways make it harder. The routes are well waymarked with the trail's own signs.
Getting there & around
Echternach, the oldest town in Luxembourg, is the main trailhead and sits about 30 minutes by bus or car from Luxembourg City; Berdorf and Consdorf are the other main access points, all linked by regional buses, which are free nationwide. The trail is self-guided and free to walk, well signed and mapped through printed topoguides and online routes from the Regional Tourist Office. Base in Echternach or a village along the route and walk day loops, or book luggage transfer to do the full circuit over three to five days.

OrganizerNatur- & Geopark Mëllerdall was admitted to the UNESCO Global Geoparks network on 13 April 2022 and covers the Mullerthal region and its Luxembourg sandstone landscape. Its team runs a year-round programme of guided hikes and geology walks that read the gorges, cliffs and springs the Mullerthal Trail passes, alongside nature education and the annual Mëllerdall Days during European Geoparks Week. The park works to protect the geosites while opening them to walkers with trained nature guides.

OrganizerThe Regional Tourist Office Mullerthal Region, based in Echternach, manages and waymarks the 112-kilometre Mullerthal Trail, the network of three routes and five ExtraTours that earned the Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe label in 2014. The office produces the trail maps and topoguides, coordinates luggage transfer and accommodation along the route, and arranges guided walks with local nature guides who read the geology and the sandstone rock formations of Little Switzerland for visitors.
