The highest mountain in Timor-Leste at 2,963 metres, also called Tatamailau or Foho Tatamailau, rising above the coffee highlands south of Dili, its summit marked by a white statue of Our Lady and reached by a pre-dawn climb from the village of Hato Builico.

Climbing Mount Ramelau for sunrise is the classic Timorese trek and a genuine pilgrimage. Tatamailau, at 2,963 metres the highest point in Timor-Leste and on the whole island of Timor, rises from the coffee-growing highlands, and the walk starts in the small hours from Hato Builico, the highest village in the country at around 1,900 metres. A steep two to three hour climb by torchlight brings you to a summit crowned by a white statue of Our Lady of Fatima, placed here in 1997, where at dawn the light spreads over ridge after ridge and, on a clear morning, both the north and south coasts of the island appear at once. Timorese climb it in numbers for the March pilgrimage, but the mountain is walkable year round with a local guide from the village, and the cool highland air and coffee slopes are a world away from the coast.
Best months
The dry season from May to October gives the clearest sunrises and safest trails; the wet months bring cloud, mud and a real chance of missing the view. It is cold at the summit before dawn, near freezing on some mornings, so warm layers, a head torch and sturdy shoes are essential. The climb is not technical but is steep and at altitude, so a basic level of fitness helps. Guides and simple lodging are arranged in Hato Builico.
Getting there & around
Hato Builico is around three to four hours by road from Dili via Aileu and Maubisse, on a rough mountain route best done by four-wheel drive or with an operator's transport. Most climbers stay overnight in a village guesthouse to start the walk at around 03:30, and a local guide is strongly recommended for the dark ascent and to support the community. Timor-Leste tour operators run Ramelau as a one or two-night trip from Dili, often paired with Atauro or the Maubisse highlands.
