Grande Comore's volcano, a 2,361-metre shield rising from tropical forest to one of the world's largest active summit calderas, roughly four kilometres across. Frequently active, Karthala dominates the main Comorian island of Ngazidja, its slopes planted with the ylang-ylang that scents the Perfume Islands.

Mount Karthala is the roof of the Comoros and one of the great volcano treks of the Indian Ocean, a 2,361-metre shield volcano whose summit holds a caldera around four kilometres wide, among the largest active craters on earth. The climb from the villages above Moroni on Grande Comore is a serious one to two day trek that passes through banana groves and dense tropical rainforest loud with endemic birds, up through tree-fern and giant-heath cloud forest, and finally onto a bare, black moonscape of ash and lava where the vegetation gives out. Camping on the crater rim, you look down into a smoking caldera that last erupted seriously in 2005 to 2007, and at dawn the view runs across the whole island to the sea. The forest holds birds found nowhere else, the Karthala scops owl and the Comoro drongo among them. It is raw, little-visited and physically demanding, a proper expedition on an island most travellers never reach.
Best months
Go in the dry season, roughly May to October, when the trail is firmer and the summit clearer; the wet season from December to April brings heavy rain, mud and cyclone risk and is best avoided. Even in the dry months the summit is cold, wet and exposed, a sharp contrast to the tropical coast, so warm and waterproof layers are essential. The volcano is active and access can close during unrest, so a local guide who knows the current state of the crater and the route is not optional.
Getting there & around
Note: the Comoros are under a US State Dept Level 2 advisory (Exercise Increased Caution) for crime, unrest and limited healthcare; medical facilities are basic, especially outside Moroni, so carry good travel insurance and check your government's current advisory. Grande Comore is reached by air into Moroni's Prince Said Ibrahim airport. The trek starts from villages such as Nvouni above the capital and must be done with a guide who arranges porters, water and camping; there are no huts or services on the mountain. Carry warm waterproof layers, a headtorch, and enough water for a cold, exposed overnight near the crater.
