Trekking / Hiking in Kakum National Park
A surviving tract of tropical rainforest half an hour inland from Cape Coast, Kakum National Park is famous for a canopy walkway strung 40 meters above the forest floor, plus guided ground trails through hardwood forest alive with birds, butterflies and forest elephants.
Why here
Kakum is Ghana's best rainforest walk, and its canopy walkway is unlike anything else in West Africa. Seven rope-and-plank suspension bridges run 350 meters from tree to tree at up to 40 meters above the forest floor, level with the crowns of ebony and mahogany giants. The park protects a rare surviving block of the Upper Guinean rainforest, home to forest elephants, bongo, several primates and more than 250 bird species, including the rare white-breasted guineafowl that draws birders from around the world. Beyond the walkway, guided ground trails take you into the forest for birding and tree identification, best in the early morning when the canopy is loud with activity. Paired with the Cape Coast castles half an hour away, it is the classic combination of Ghana's coast: heavy history in the morning, high forest in the afternoon.
Best months
The drier months, November to March, give the firmest trails and clearest canopy views, though the forest is green year-round and a short shower is always possible. The gates open early, and a dawn start is worth it for birdsong, cooler air and thinner crowds on the bridges. The canopy walk itself takes about forty minutes at a gentle pace, while longer guided forest trails run from one hour to a full day.
Getting there & around
Kakum's main gate is about 30 kilometers, half an hour, north of Cape Coast on a sealed road, so most visitors base in Cape Coast or Elmina and come for a morning. The canopy walkway and guided trails are arranged at the visitor center run by the Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust. Accra is around three hours further east, making Kakum an easy add-on to a coastal trip.

OrganizerThe Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust manages the visitor center and canopy walkway at Kakum National Park. The walkway opened in March 1995, built by two Canadian engineers as a joint project of Ghana's Wildlife Division and Conservation International. Its seven suspension bridges run 350 meters through the rainforest canopy at up to 40 meters above the forest floor. The Trust runs guided canopy crossings and forest walks, including early-morning departures for the park's birdlife.
