Why here
Zermatt is the summit of the ski world in the literal sense: the highest lift-served skiing in Switzerland at 3,883 meters, glacier runs that operate year-round, and the Matterhorn standing over every descent. For ski tourers it is the destination in the oldest sense, the finishing line of the Haute Route from Chamonix, six or seven days of glacier travel and 3,000-meter cols through the Valais that ends with the Matterhorn filling the horizon, the most famous ski tour on earth and a guided rite of passage for fit ski mountaineers. Around the touring, the resort's 360 kilometers of pistes link over the Theodul pass into Italy's Cervinia, and the village's guiding institutions run everything from first off-piste days to 4000er ski descents.
Best months
The lift season runs November to early May with summer glacier skiing on top; the Haute Route window is March to early May, when days lengthen and the snowpack consolidates for glacier travel. The tour demands genuine fitness, competent off-piste skiing with a pack, and a guide, with hut reservations locked months ahead for the classic huts. Resort skiing peaks December to April. High-altitude weather closes the top lifts on storm days, and Italy-side returns need timing.
Getting there & around
Zermatt is car-free, reached by train from Visp with airport connections from Zurich in about three and a half hours or Geneva in four; Täsch holds the cars. Haute Route parties typically start in Chamonix and should book guides and huts the preceding autumn. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lift accesses the year-round glacier skiing. Prices sit at the top of the Alps in every category, with Täsch and Randa as the budget-softening bases.
