Why here
When the Dutch lost their own eleven-cities skating tour to warming winters, they moved it here. The Weissensee freezes into 6.5 square kilometers of groomed natural ice, the largest prepared surface in Europe, and every January it hosts the Alternative Elfstedentocht: two weeks of marathon skating where thousands of Dutch and international skaters cover 100 and 200 kilometer distances on black lake ice between Carinthian mountains. Outside race days the lake belongs to everyone, with tracks groomed daily for leisure skaters, ice hockey pitches, and skate schools and rentals making first-time natural-ice skating accessible. Nothing else in the Alps offers distance skating at this scale, and the atmosphere during Dutch weeks, brass bands and stroopwafel stands on a frozen Austrian lake, is unrepeatable.
Best months
The natural ice season runs roughly late December to late February, with the Alternative Elfstedentocht events concentrated in the second half of January. Ice preparation is professionally managed with daily condition reports, and skating areas open progressively as the ice thickens. Mild winters compress the season, so confirm ice status before traveling. Marathon participation requires registration months ahead through the Dutch organization; spectating and leisure skating need nothing but skates, rentable lakeside.
Getting there & around
Klagenfurt airport is about an hour by car; Salzburg and Venice sit around two and a half hours. The lake's north shore villages, Techendorf foremost, hold the accommodation, and Dutch weeks book out a year ahead. A car is the practical arrival, though rail to Greifenburg plus bus works. Skate rental, courses and ice-condition information run through the lakeside operations. Nordic skating gear suits the distances; hockey skates suffice for the groomed loops.

Alternatieve Elfstedentocht Weissensee

Registration opens months ahead and the Dutch weeks define the lake's high season; the organization's site carries schedules, entry and ice information.
Skischule Weissensee
SchoolSkischule Weissensee is listed on the Kaerntner Skischulverband register of Carinthian ski schools at Gatschach 71, 9762 Weissensee, under Peter Schwarzenbacher, and is the only school the register places on the lake. It is run by the Schwarzenbacher family as part of Hotel Arlbergerhof at Gatschach on the Weissensee, and the family states it has led the ski school there for fifty years. Teaching starts from age four in a dedicated childrens area away from the lift queues, and alpine skiing is the only discipline described on the schools own page. The KSSV holds the Carinthian state government mandate to run the snow-sports instructor examinations under the Kaerntner Skischulgesetz.
