Why here

Spindleruv Mlyn is the Czech Republic's leading winter resort, set deep in the Krkonose, the Giant Mountains, the country's highest range on the Polish border. Its linked ski areas, Svaty Petr and Medvedin, offer the most extensive pistes and the longest, most reliable season in the country, with snowmaking, night skiing and slopes for beginners through to World Cup racing. The setting is a national park of spruce forest and glacial cirques below Snezka, the highest Czech peak at 1,603 metres, which draws hikers in summer and ski tourers in winter. It is not the Alps, but for learning to ski, a family week or an easy-access snow trip from Prague, Spindleruv Mlyn is where Czechs themselves go. Long-running ski schools make it a straightforward place to take your first lessons.

The ski season typically runs from December to March, with the best cover in January and February, and extensive snowmaking backs up the natural snow. Slopes suit beginners and intermediates, with steeper race pistes at Svaty Petr, and the resort runs night skiing. In summer the same mountains switch to hiking and biking. Lessons and rentals are easy to arrange in the village.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Spindleruv Mlyn is about two to two and a half hours by road northeast of Prague; there is no direct train, so most visitors drive or take a bus via Vrchlabi. Ski schools, rentals and lifts cluster in the village and at the Svaty Petr and Medvedin base stations. Book lessons ahead in the January-February peak and over holidays, when the resort and its access roads are busy.
