Skiing & Snowsports in Mavrovo
North Macedonia's flagship ski resort inside a national park, with 15 km of pistes, night skiing, and a half-sunken church on the lake.
Why here
Mavrovo is North Macedonia's flagship winter resort and one of Europe's cheapest lift-served mountains: the Zare Lazarevski center runs eleven lifts and three chairlifts over about fifteen kilometers of pistes between 1,255 and 1,860 meters, inside a national park with Bistra's slopes above the lake and the famously half-submerged St. Nicholas church at the shore. Day passes cost a fraction of Alpine prices, night skiing runs on weekends, and the local ski school takes true beginners in English. The season stretches December to April in good years, ninety minutes from Skopje.
Best months
December to April, with January and February the reliable core. Pistes favor beginners and intermediates; storage snow varies year to year, so check conditions before a long trip. Night skiing runs on weekend evenings.
Getting there & around
Ninety minutes to two hours by road from Skopje; no rail. Rental gear and lessons are available at the base. Weekends bring Skopje crowds to the lifts.
