Skiing & Snowsports in Jasna
Slovakia's largest ski resort, spread over the north and south faces of Mount Chopok in the Low Tatras, with the biggest lift-served vertical in the country and snowmaking that holds a season from December into spring.
Why here
Jasna Nizke Tatry is the one Slovak ski area that stands comparison with the Alps, and it does it at a fraction of the price. The resort covers both flanks of Mount Chopok, whose 2024 metre summit is linked north to south by cable car, and strings together around 50 kilometres of piste served by 20-odd lifts, the most extensive lift network in the country. The north side holds the shade and the steeper, more serious runs, including proper off-piste bowls and couloirs that give it a freeride reputation; the sunnier south side is gentler and better for learning. A modern snowmaking system with hundreds of guns covers much of the terrain and underwrites a season that reliably runs five months. It is a resort you come to for the vertical and the variety, not the glitz.
Best months
The core season runs December through March, with the highest north-facing runs often skiable into April. Chopok is exposed, so the top cable car and ridge lifts close in high wind and the weather can shut the summit crossing between the two sides. Snowmaking covers the main pistes, but the off-piste bowls need a genuine snowfall and avalanche caution. South-side slopes soften in spring sun by afternoon.
Getting there & around
The resort sits above Liptovsky Mikulas, about a two hour drive or train from Poprad or four from Bratislava, with the valley village of Demanovska Dolina at its foot for lodging. Lift passes and lessons are sold online through Gopass or on the mountain. A car helps for reaching the base lifts, though ski buses run up the valley in season. Rental and storage are available at both the Biela Put and south-side base stations.
