A town in the Belgian Ardennes where the river Lesse meets the Meuse, wedged below a cliff-top citadel and a spired collegiate church. The birthplace of Adolphe Sax, it is the base for the classic Lesse kayak descent through the wooded valleys of Wallonia.
Why here
The Lesse is Belgium's best-loved river descent, and paddling it is the classic way into the Ardennes. From spring to autumn, outfitters at Anseremme ferry you upstream to Houyet or Gendron and set you loose to float and paddle the 12 or 21km back down to the confluence with the Meuse below Dinant, through a steep wooded valley that is a Natura 2000 reserve. This is not big whitewater: the Lesse is mostly gentle, quick-flowing water with a scattering of small rapids, weirs and shallow chutes that keep it lively without demanding real skill, which is exactly why it works as a first river trip and a family day out. The scenery does the heavy lifting, with the cliff-top Chateau de Walzin rising straight from the water and kingfishers along the banks. Levels depend on rainfall, and the river can close in a high-summer drought or run fast after storms, so the descent is seasonal and weather-dependent rather than a sure thing on any given day.
Best months
The Lesse descent runs from around 1 April to 31 October, weather and water permitting. It is a warm-season activity: the operators need enough flow to run, so the river can be suspended in a dry summer, as it was during the 2026 drought, and it moves faster and colder after heavy rain. Spring and early autumn give the best mix of flow and quiet; July and August are busiest. You will get wet, so bring a change of clothes and shoes that can be soaked, and children usually share a kayak with an adult.
Getting there & around
Anseremme is a riverside suburb of Dinant, about an hour and a half by train from Brussels with a change, and both operators have their ticket offices and landings there. The descent is one-way: you are transferred upstream to Houyet or Gendron by train or bus and paddle back down, with the shuttle included in the price. Book ahead in July and August, check that the river is running before you travel in a dry spell, and allow most of a day for the longer route.

It offers routes of roughly 9, 12 and 21km on stable open kayaks and canoes, transferring paddlers upriver by train or bus to float back down through a Natura 2000 nature reserve past the Chateau de Walzin. OutfitterKayaks Libert is a family kayak operator on the Lesse with its ticket office and landing on the Quai de Meuse at Anseremme, near where the river joins the Meuse below Dinant. It runs the 12km and 21km descents daily from the start of April to the end of October, ferrying paddlers upstream to Gendron or Houyet for the float back down through the protected valley. It now works alongside Dinant Evasion, and the run suits families, with light kayaks and several small rapids and weirs along the way.
