Key Largo pairs the continental US's only living coral barrier reef, protected inside a national marine sanctuary, with one of the world's great wreck lineups: the USS Spiegel Grove, a 155-meter landing ship in 15 to 40 meters that takes two dives just to tour the outside, plus the Duane and Bibb. The infrastructure matches: Rainbow Reef is one of the largest dive centers in North America, a PADI Career Development Center running a full boat fleet and three night dives a week, while Horizon Divers carries the technical ladder through advanced wreck, trimix, and rebreather. Everything is day-boat, no liveaboard required, and Christ of the Abyss remains the hemisphere's most photographed underwater statue.
Best months
Diveable year-round; May through September brings the calmest seas and 29 C water, with Goliath grouper aggregations in August and September. August to October carries hurricane-season weather risk. Boats run daily on published schedules.
Getting there & around
Fly to Miami (MIA), then about 90 minutes south. Book boats a few days ahead in summer; courses and technical programs further out.
