Scuba Diving in EloundaGR
A sheltered bay on Crete's northeast coast — calm, clear Mediterranean water, proximity to the submerged ancient city of Olous, and the most developed diving and freediving infrastructure on the island.
Why here
Mediterranean diving is a different proposition to tropical — cooler, clearer, and defined by geology and archaeology rather than reef life. Elounda's standout site is the partially submerged ancient city of Olous: wall remnants, column bases, and mosaic floors visible in 2-6m of crystalline water. Spinalonga island adds wall and wreck context. For divers who have done the tropical circuit, Mediterranean structure diving — with its underwater archaeology and dramatic limestone formations — offers a genuinely distinct perspective.
Best months
Water temperature climbs from 18°C in May to 26°C in August, with peak visibility (20-25m) in June-July before summer plankton reduces it slightly. The Gulf of Mirabello is well-sheltered — surface conditions are calm even when the northern Aegean is rough. No significant currents inside the gulf. Marine life is subtler than tropical: octopus, moray eel, bream, and occasional loggerhead turtles.
Getting there & around
Elounda is 70km east of Heraklion by road (approximately 1 hour). Two or three dive centers operate in the village — most run half-day trips with two dives from the harbor. PADI Open Water courses available. Combine with a base in Elounda village for an easy, self-contained diving trip without a rental car.
