Sailing in Tenerife
Spain's largest Canary Island sits at 28 degrees north latitude, Atlantic water stays 18-24 degrees Celsius year-round, making Tenerife Europe's most practical winter freediving training destination, with dedicated schools and volcanic depth infrastructure accessible close to shore.
Why here
Tenerife has the best ratio of real winter sailing weather to verified RYA provider depth in the Atlantic, and unlike Las Palmas in November it is not swamped by a rally. Sea temperature holds around 21 to 22C, there is no cyclone exposure, and the island sits in the same trade belt as the rest of the Canaries. The practical draw is mile-building: the RYA practical week requires a minimum of 100 nautical miles, and the hop across to La Gomera plus the string of ports along the south coast delivers them without a long ocean passage. Two RYA centers operate here, one of which is also an ICC test center.
Best months
The Canaries sail year round. The northeast trades are strongest from May through August and milder but still workable through the winter, with December daytime air around 22C and generally superb visibility. Wind accelerates hard around the headlands and through the channels between islands, so a passage that starts gentle in the lee can be a different proposition once you clear the corner. The south coast marinas are the practical base because the north of the island is more exposed.
Getting there & around
Tenerife South airport is 15 minutes from the southern marinas and takes direct flights from across Europe. The two schools are not in the same place: one is at Marina San Miguel in San Miguel de Abona, the other at Marina del Sur in Las Galletas, about seven kilometers west. Inter-island practical weeks run to La Gomera, which is the standard hop; La Palma is further and is not a routine offering, so do not assume it. Note that El Medano on the same island is a windsurf and kitesurf hub with no connection to these sailing operators.
