Sailing in Palma de Mallorca
The Mediterranean's superyacht capital, whose year-round refit and crewing industry supports a density of professional maritime training found almost nowhere else.
Why here
Come to Palma in winter for the certificate, not the sunshine. This is the Mediterranean's superyacht capital, and the refit yards, crew agencies and training centers work through the off-season when the cruising fleet has gone. That makes November through March the sensible window for the shore-based half of a sailing qualification: theory, radio, diesel, sea survival, and the commercial modules that turn a recreational certificate into a working one. One school here carries three RYA examiners on staff, which is unusual anywhere. Do not book this window expecting passage-making weather.
Best months
This is deliberately not framed as a cruising season. The Balearics average around 18C annually with roughly 300 days of sunshine, and winter sailing is possible in gentler and less predictable air than the summer, but the local industry treats these months as classroom and yard time. Expect theory in a room rather than miles in a logbook. If you need qualifying passage miles, plan them elsewhere or in another season, because promising them here in December is the mistake this row exists to prevent.
Getting there & around
Palma airport is well connected across Europe year round and is 20 minutes from the waterfront. The two schools are not both in the shipyard district despite how the area is usually described: one is on the Paseo Maritimo opposite the superyacht marinas, the other berths at Club de Mar. Between them they cover the RYA sail cruising and navigation ladder, ICC, and the commercial deck, engineering and safety modules. Off-season accommodation in Palma is inexpensive compared with summer, which is part of why a multi-week certificate block makes sense here in winter.
