Sailing in Masurian Lakes
The Great Masurian Lakes of north-eastern Poland, a connected network of glacial lakes, canals and rivers stretching roughly 150 kilometres through Warmia-Masuria. Ringed by forest and small sailing towns like Gizycko and Mikolajki, it is Poland's premier inland sailing ground, centred on the country's largest lake, Sniardwy.
Why here
Masuria is Poland at play on the water, a lake-land where dozens of glacial lakes are stitched together by canals into one long navigable chain you can sail for a week without repeating a harbour. Gizycko is the sailing capital, with charter marinas, a swing bridge and a fortress, and from there the route runs south through Niegocin, past the resort of Mikolajki to Sniardwy, the largest lake in Poland. The scale is gentle and inland, so it suits first-time skippers and families as much as seasoned sailors, and much of the fleet can be taken out without a formal licence. Warm summer days, forest-fringed anchorages and lakeside taverns make it a classic Polish summer.
Best months
The sailing season runs May to September, with July and August warmest, busiest and most reliable for wind, and the shoulder months quieter on the water. Masurian weather can turn quickly with summer squalls and thunderstorms, so watch the forecast and the harbour warning lights. Peak-season marinas at Gizycko and Mikolajki fill in the evenings, and popular charter boats should be reserved well ahead.
Getting there & around
Gizycko, the main charter hub, is about three to four hours by road or rail from Warsaw. Yachts are chartered by the day or week from marinas on Lake Niegocin; some motorboats and houseboats need no licence, while sailing yachts usually require a Polish inland sailing permit or a skipper. Book high-season boats early, plan a route along the connected lakes and canals, and factor bridge and lock opening times into the day.
