Sailing in Lanzarote
The Canaries' sailing classroom: year-round trade winds, real Atlantic tidal water, and a rare cluster of RYA training centers at Puerto Calero.
Why here
The Canaries are Europe's only warm-water, year-round RYA training ground with genuine tides, and that last detail matters: RYA tidal qualifications, Day Skipper through Yachtmaster, require tidal water, which the Mediterranean cannot provide. Lanzarote concentrates a rare cluster of RYA-recognized centers around Puerto Calero, teaching in reliable northeast trades and 20-to-26-degree air even in January, with real Atlantic passages between islands for mile-building. The archipelago sits on the historic trade-wind route, and the ARC transatlantic ecosystem next door at Las Palmas gives ambitious students something to graduate into.
Best months
Sailable all year; October through June is ideal, dodging the strongest summer trade acceleration. Courses run in week blocks. Winter is the unique selling point: real qualifications earned in shorts while northern Europe is iced in.
Getting there & around
Fly to Lanzarote (ACE), with heavy European coverage; Puerto Calero marina is 15 minutes away. Book week-long RYA courses one to three months ahead.
