Sailing in Langkawi
Duty-free archipelago on Malaysia's northwest coast, and the base for RYA yacht training on the Andaman Sea.
Why here
Langkawi is where you convert an RYA certificate into real offshore miles without paying Mediterranean prices. Two RYA schools operate on the island, both running the full ladder from Competent Crew to Yachtmaster Offshore, and both offering Fastrack programs that compress theory and practical into consecutive weeks. What makes the place unusual is the cruising ground. The Andaman Sea north to Phuket and the Thai islands is a genuine passage rather than a bay, so qualifying miles here come from coastal navigation between two countries instead of laps of a harbor. Groups are small, four or five students, and the whole thing costs well under the European equivalent.
Best months
The month split matters more here than the season does. November is the tail of the southwest monsoon and averages around 193mm of rain across roughly 16 wet days. December drops to about 57.5mm over 8 days as the northeast monsoon establishes, which is the difference between a wet week and a good one. Book December if you have the choice. Winds are light for much of the year, and that is worth saying plainly: this is a place to learn boat handling, navigation and passage planning, not heavy-weather sailing. Water is warm year round, and squalls arrive fast and leave fast. The Royal Langkawi International Regatta is a January event, so it is not a reason to come in either of these months.
Getting there & around
Fly into Langkawi International direct from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Penang. Both schools work out of the Kuah end of the island, one of them from Royal Langkawi Yacht Club. Langkawi is duty free, which keeps provisioning and eating cheap. Instruction is in English. Longer courses run liveaboard, so the boat is the accommodation. If you want the Phuket passage, confirm it explicitly at booking. Not every course includes a border crossing, and the ones that do need passport and clearance paperwork arranged in advance.
