Sailing in Kuwait City
Kuwait's capital at the head of the Arabian Gulf, a modern city on the site of an old dhow-trading and pearling port. The waterfront runs from the landmark Kuwait Towers past the Grand Mosque and the souqs to the Scientific Center's aquarium, with the Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Centre and the National Museum holding the country's collections.
Why here
Kuwait's wealth was built on the sea long before oil, on dhows that carried goods across the Gulf and to India and East Africa, and on the pearling fleets that sailed each summer. That maritime thread is still alive on the water off Kuwait City, where the Gulf's steady winter winds make for reliable sailing. The place to plug into it is the Kuwait Offshore Sailing Association, the country's only yacht club, founded by resident sailors more than twenty-five years ago at the Fahaheel Sea Club south of the capital. It runs keelboat sailing and training on the northern Gulf, follows the Royal Yachting Association's Competent Crew syllabus, and holds a regular calendar of club races and offshore passages out toward Kuwait's islands. For a visitor it is a way to learn to sail or to crew on the same waters the old dhows worked, with local sailors who know the winds, tides and shoals of the head of the Gulf.
Best months
The sailing season runs through the cooler half of the year, roughly October to April, when the northerly shamal winds give the most reliable breeze and the heat is bearable; high summer is too hot for comfortable sailing. Winter shamals can blow hard and kick up short Gulf seas, so passages are planned around the forecast. The water is warm and the sailing area is a mix of open Gulf and the approaches to Kuwait's low islands, with shoals that reward local knowledge.

US State Dept Level 3 Reconsider Travel (as of 2026-07), heightened regional tensions after the February 2026 US-Iran hostilities, with periodic Gulf airspace closures and flight disruptions; check your government's current advisory before booking. The Kuwait Offshore Sailing Association is based at the Fahaheel Sea Club, about 40 minutes south of central Kuwait City by taxi or ride-hail. Contact the club ahead to arrange training, a taster sail or a crew place on a club race, as sessions run to a schedule and boats fill. Kuwait International Airport is a short drive from the city. Bring soft-soled shoes, a hat and sun protection.

Kuwait Offshore Sailing Association
ClubThe Kuwait Offshore Sailing Association is the only yacht club in Kuwait, founded by resident sailors more than twenty-five years ago and based at the Fahaheel Sea Club south of Kuwait City. It runs keelboat sailing, training and racing on the northern Arabian Gulf, and although it is not a Royal Yachting Association training centre it is an RYA-affiliated club whose instruction follows the RYA Competent Crew syllabus. Its calendar includes club races and offshore passages.
