Kieler Woche is sailing's biggest stage: the world's largest sailing event and simultaneously northern Europe's largest summer festival, nine June days when around 4,000 boats race on the Kiel fjord, from Olympic classes to offshore fleets, while three million visitors fill the waterfront. For sailors it is the sport's great annual gathering, with international regatta entry open across dozens of classes through the official Notice of Race, and for travelers it is the rare world championship you can watch from a city shoreline with a fish roll in hand, closing with the windjammer parade of tall ships. Around the week itself, Kiel's fjord runs one of Europe's densest sailing infrastructures of clubs and schools, making the city a place to learn the sport, not just watch it.
Best months
Kieler Woche runs across the last full week of June, with racing daily and the tall ship parade as the final-weekend centerpiece. Baltic June weather swings from t-shirt sun to squalls in the same afternoon; the racing goes out regardless. Regatta entry closes through the official channels well ahead; spectating needs no ticket, with the Schilksee Olympic center as the racing hub and the inner fjord as the festival. The wider sailing season on the fjord runs May to September.
Getting there & around
Hamburg airport is about 90 minutes by direct rail or car. Book Kiel accommodation many months ahead for the Woche or stay along the rail line toward Eckernförde and Plön. The festival waterfront and the Schilksee race harbor sit 30 minutes apart, connected by shuttle boats and buses during the event. Competitors handle entry through the official Notice of Race; visiting sailors can charter or join club programs on the fjord through the season.

SchoolSAILAWAY YACHTSPORT appears in the Deutscher Segler-Verband's register of recognised sailing schools at Fliegender Hollaender 15-17 in Kiel, in the Ladenzeile at the Olympiazentrum Kiel-Schilksee. The DSV record lists training for the Sportbootfuehrerschein Binnen and See, the Sportkuestenschifferschein, Sportseeschifferschein and Sporthochseeschifferschein, and the associated radio certificates. Its own site adds the Segelschein Yacht and the SRC, skipper and manoeuvring training, Mitsegeltoerns on the Baltic, North Sea, Atlantic and to the Canaries, and yacht charter. It describes itself as the first DMYV Premium-Ausbildungsstaette on the Baltic.
Segler-Vereinigung Kiel
ClubSegler-Vereinigung Kiel is a sailing club at Kiellinie 215 in Kiel, listed by the Deutscher Segler-Verband among the clubs offering inclusive sailing. The DSV page records a taster day, regular sailing and training, free sailing sessions and a training camp or compact week, sailed in the C55 boat class, and notes a barrier-free clubhouse and dock. The club's own site sets out programmes for regatta sailing, adult sailing, club sailing, afterwork sailing and inclusive sailing. Its inclusive group has competed at Special Olympics events.
