Sailing in Hong Kong

Hong Kong · East Asia

Why here

The northeast monsoon gives Hong Kong its driest and steadiest air of the year, and the sailing scene is far deeper than the skyline suggests. The Around the Island Race sends more than 200 boats and 1,500 sailors 26 nautical miles around Hong Kong Island in November. Three clubs teach adult courses that a visitor can book, covering both the RYA cruising ladder and the Hong Kong Sailing Federation dinghy syllabus, and RYA Yachtmaster examinations are held locally rather than requiring a fly-in examiner.

The northeast monsoon runs roughly October to March and delivers the most reliable breeze and the clearest air of the year, which is why the racing calendar clusters here. Summer is hot, humid and typhoon-exposed, so the winter window is the serious season. Water stays mild enough that a shorty works into December. Sai Kung on the eastern side is more sheltered and greener than Victoria Harbour, which is where most instruction happens.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

Hong Kong International connects almost everywhere and the city's transport makes club access easy. The three teaching clubs are spread out: one on Kellett Island in Causeway Bay, one at Pak Sha Wan in Sai Kung about 45 minutes east, and one on the south side of the island. All three publish non-member course pricing, so club membership is not a prerequisite. The Around the Island Race falls on November 7 in 2026; note that some listings place it in December, which is wrong, and the China Coast Regatta is a separate October event.
