Why here
The Blue Cruise was invented on this coast: slow voyages by traditional wooden gulet through the Gulf of Fethiye's twelve islands, swimming in coves reachable only by boat, mooring under pine forests, with ruins from Lycian tombs to sunken Cleopatra's baths as the waypoints. Gocek is its home port and the most sheltered cruising ground in the eastern Mediterranean, which is also why Turkey's first RYA sea school set up here in 1996: the same protected gulf that pampers gulet guests teaches new sailors, from Competent Crew to Yachtmaster, at prices well under western Mediterranean schools. Come as a passenger on a crewed gulet or leave as a qualified skipper; the gulf serves both.
Best months
The season runs April through October, with a reliable, moderate afternoon sea breeze and famously flat water inside the gulf; July-August is hottest and busiest, while May-June and September-October are the connoisseur's windows. Gulet charters run by the cabin or whole boat; courses and bareboat charters book Saturday to Saturday.
Getting there & around
Fly into Dalaman (DLM), twenty minutes from Gocek's marinas, one of the shortest airport-to-boat transfers in sailing. Book gulet cabins or RYA course weeks one to three months ahead for high summer. The gulf's dozen anchorages are all within a short sail, so even one-week itineraries feel unhurried.
