Sailing in El NidoPH

The limestone-island gateway of northern Palawan, where hundreds of karst islets scatter across lagoons between here and Coron. The starting line for the Philippines' great multi-day island voyages.

Why here

The 250 kilometres of island-studded sea between El Nido and Coron hold the Philippines' definitive voyage: multi-day expeditions by traditional bangka through waters too remote for day trips, swimming off deserted beaches, snorkeling untouched reefs, and sleeping in bamboo huts on islands without names on most maps. The expedition format, no fixed itinerary, weather deciding the route, meals cooked on deck from the day's catch, is closer to real seafaring than any charter brochure, and it opened a stretch of Palawan that otherwise belongs to fishing families alone. For travelers who measure a trip by how far it gets from the grid, this is Southeast Asia's benchmark.

Expeditions run October through July, with the February-May window calmest and driest; the August-September habagat season shuts the route down. Crossings are open-water in traditional boats: expect sun, salt, and swell, with the crew adjusting the route daily to conditions.

Getting there & around

Complex logistics

Fly into El Nido (ENI) or into Puerto Princesa plus a five-hour drive; expeditions also run the reverse route from Coron (USU). Book the multi-day expeditions weeks to months ahead for the dry season; bring soft luggage, reef-safe sunscreen, and low expectations of connectivity, which is the point. The route pairs naturally with Coron's wreck diving at the far end.
